JE # 150 – In Times Like This

Calamities are bound to come especially in a tropical country like the Philippines. Typhoons, earthquakes, landslides, floods and tsunamis are just few scenarios that we experienced or being experienced in our country. These occurrences can paralyze us from our normal way of life. It could even kill us. But what should we do when these come? How should a Christian react to such?

Reflect

Reflect on why these things are happening. What’s our contribution to nature that God allowed a calamity to happen? Is it because of our sin? Is it because of our neglect? Neglecting our love for nature and God?  God will not allow things to happen without his permission. Remember when Jonah was going away from God? He sent a great storm to remind Jonah of his mission. Surely, He has a purpose for letting calamities strike our land. We just need to seek God’s heart for that. Of course, we need to repent for all the sins we’ve committed and resolve to change our ways. J

Pray

This is the best thing that believers should do. Pray! During storms, God reveals that He is sovereign. He certainly controls everything. So as His children, we can ask, we can plead to our Sovereign and Almighty God. Prayer is so powerful that it can move mountains. It can even do the impossible.

Prepare

As I mentioned earlier, calamities will always come. We just don’t know when. It is important to be prepared. And what should we prepare? First, our heart, soul and mind. We need to be strong inside before facing a physical storm outside. Second, our emergency kit. Petty items included on this kit could save us when a storm hits us. Third, be alert. Watch out for the latest updates on TV or radio. You may be prompted to evacuate your place when floods rise.

Help

As I watched the images of Typhoon Ondoy, my heart was crushed. Images of people asking to be saved brought me to tears. How should we react? Crying and praying will not be enough. Victims need food and clothing. We need to help our kababayans. If you’re not a victim, praise God that you’re spared and thank Him that you have this opportunity to show kindness to people in need.

After the storm, TV networks and other charitable organizations started to raise funds for the victims. Our church’ charity arm was also mobilized to help our affected members and other victims.

You can help in any way. You can share your resources. Donate some money or clothes. If you don’t have one, you can share your time and talent. Help in the repacking of relief goods in a charitable organization.  If you’re a nurse or a doctor, you can even join in medical mission. There’s always something that you can do to help.

Since you excel in so many ways—in your faith, your gifted speakers, your knowledge, your enthusiasm, and your love from us—I want you to excel also in this gracious act of giving.

–          2 Corinthians 8:7 New Living Transalation

Smile

What’s amazing about Pinoys is that we can always smile in the midst of the storm or any hardship. The song is right, “with Christ in my vessel, I can smile at the storm”.

Trust and Obey

May the storms that strike us remind that we can do nothing on our own. We need to trust  and obey God in everything.

Let me end this post with these verses from Hosea Chapter 6:

1 “Come, let us return to the LORD.
He has torn us to pieces
but he will heal us;
he has injured us
but he will bind up our wounds.

2 After two days he will revive us;
on the third day he will restore us,
that we may live in his presence.

3 Let us acknowledge the LORD;
let us press on to acknowledge him.
As surely as the sun rises,
he will appear;
he will come to us like the winter rains,
like the spring rains that water the earth.”

God keep us.

JE # 149 – Wash Your Sins

Setyembre 18, 2009

washMaghugas ng Kasalanan

By Bro. Bren

Good Friday, 10 April 2009 23:35

First, let us define sin. To sin is to miss the mark. It is failing at something that has been set to be observed by everyone.

1 John 3:4 says, “ Everyone who sins breaks the law, in fact sin is lawlessness.

When you break the law, you commit sin. – KAMATAYAN!

For the wages of sin is DEATH, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (emphasis mine)

Sabi yan ng Romans 6:23. Nakakatakot ba?

…For you are dust,

and to dust you shall return.

But for the cowardly, unbelieving, sinners, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their part is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Merong dalawang kamatayan ang binabanggit sa Bible, physical and spiritual, which is the second death. Lahat tayo bound to the second death.

Nagpapasugat. Ano ang sabi ng Bible tungkol dito?

Proverbs 21:3

To do righteousness and justice

is more acceptable to Yahweh than sacrifice.

Isaiah 64:6

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags…

1John 1:7

… the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

Yes, it is the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from all sin! Kung walang shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sin (Hebrews 9:22).

Repent. To repent is to turn away from sin and decide to follow the ways of God.  Then, ipagkatiwala ang kaligtasan sa Panginoong Jesus. Declare with faith in your heart that his work on the cross is enough to save us from the punishment of sin. Sabi sa Ephesians 2:8-10

for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.

coryaquino

Today, the whole nation mourns for the lost a great leader – the democracy icon, former President Corazon Aquino.  No other President who has a loving heart for the country.

Thank you for your contributions. Thank you for the love of this country. Thank you for standing up for democracy.

Here’s an excerpt from the interview of Jessica Soho to the former President:

JS: Ma’am palagay niyo, saan pupunta itong bansang ito?

I still have great hopes.

Kaya nga I am so glad that it was at the suggestion of some people that we try to revive iyong “being like Ninoy,” that the Filipinos are like Ninoy, ready to sacrifice and to give their all for the sake of the country.

I also realized I have so much to be grateful for. I always tell my children, “Siguro 90% of the population have it so much worse. We really are so privileged so we have to show and return all these gifts that have been given to us.”

JE # 122 – Feel Mo na ba ang Pasko?

Disyembre 17, 2008

Well, magsasaya tayo ng di nagkakasala.

Remember, during the first Christmas, the wise men, Mary and Joseph did not exchange gifts. The wise men gave gifts without expecting something in return. Well, if you’re generous enough, give without expecting something.

Treasure must be enjoyed. Sabi sa Ecclesiastes 2:24

There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God. Ecclesiastes 2:24 (King James Version)

Bakit may Pasko? Dahil may Jesus na dumating sa mundo at nakasama natin.

John 1:14

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Real Christmas is the dwelling of Christ within us.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: John 1:12 (King James Version)

Once you receive the Lord Jesus as your Lord and Savior, ikaw ay may tunay na Pasko. Having Jesus everyday is experiencing Christmas day by day. Feel na feel mo ang pasko araw-araw! Sana ganito tayo araw-araw. Marami ang naglo-long na sana araw-araw Pasko. Hindi dahil gusto nilang maexperience ang Savior everyday but because of the material things they receive on Christmas season.

Life is a gift. Enjoy and treasure each day by living it for Jesus.

Colossians 1:16

For by him all things were created, in the heavens and on the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and for him.

I don’t demonize Christmas celebration. Gawin lang natin ng tama. Remember: Christmas is all about Jesus!

JE # 96 – Fear of the Lord

Setyembre 20, 2008

Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

When fear is mentioned, we usually think of fright, alarm or terror. But what about the “fear of the Lord”? Does it mean the same thing? According to an author, ” fear of the LORD” means a good relationship with God based on reverence and respect for Him and His commands.”

Fear of the Lord is living righteously. When we fear God, we dare not take Him lightly. To fear the LORD is to always examine our ways whether with conform with God’s standard of holiness and righteousness.

Today, we’ll learn from David about the fear of the Lord.

” Come, my children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the LORD”

– Psalm 34:11

Nauna po dito sabi nia sa verse 9

9 Fear the LORD, you his saints,
for those who fear him lack nothing.

Ang tao daw na may takot sa Dios ay hindi magkukulang because God provides blessings for His saints – blessings for those who fear Him. At nadiscuss po natin kanina that fear of the LORD is having a good relationship with God. When you have a good relationship with God, you will lack nothing.

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

– Psalm 23:1

Promise yan ng LORD!

But how do we fear the LORD according to David?

1. KEEP YOUR TONGUE FROM EVIL

13 keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from speaking lies.

Out of the same mouth comes praising and cursing. James said this should not be. As children of God, we should speak only what is good and encouraging. Many Christians are still guilty of this.

Isang nanay, sasabihin sa anak: “Anak, pag tumawag si kumare, sabihin mo wala ako. Naniningil kasi ng utang yun!”

What kind of example do you show to your children? They will think that it is OK to lie.

Ba’t di nia nalang sabihin, wla siyang pambayad. Tapos! Wala ng nagkakasala.

If we speak the truth, we will be set free. If we keep on telling lies, nagiging slave or children tayo ni Satan who is the Father of Lies! Do you want that? Jesus is the TRUTH, so we speak what is true and pleasant! I appreciate those people who spend their remaining time with prayer and Bible study. They are wise in managing their time. If you fear the LORD, you should control your tongue from speaking evil.

2. TURN FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD

14 Turn from evil and do good;

Everybody knows what is good and evil. Our God has given us His Spirit to distinguish good from evil. Si Paul may payo sa mga Ephesians after they received Christ:

He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.

–  Ephesians 4:28

A Christian is not a slave of sin anymore. Sabi ni Paul, ” Huwag ka ng magnakaw. Magtrabaho ka para may silbi ka naman. ” If you fear God, stop stealing. If dati kang tsismosa, stop being tsismosa.

What Paul and David were saying is that meron kang mabuting magagawa. Instead of spending your time with foolish or evil things, you can devote your time to godly things. Paul said, “Work, so you can help other people in need.” Kesa malalaswang magazine, read your Bible or any inspirational book that could help you improve yourself. Huwag puro gimik. Kesa nagtsitsismis, why not look for someone to be prayed for? Let us be wise in spending our time by doing good. Remember, a God-fearing person is always busy doing good things.

Lastly,

3. SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT

14b seek peace and pursue it.

Christians are not trouble-makers, they are peace-makers. If you fear the LORD, hindi ikaw ang nag-uumpisa ng away.

As Christians, we should seek and pursue peace. Sabi sa Matthew 5:9

9Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.

Our God is a God of peace. Peaceful dahil wala kang kagalit. Peaceful because we know we’re doing good. Peaceful because we speak no lies and curse no one. Peaceful because we multiply joyful people. Peaceful dahil wala kang niloloko. Makakatulog ka ng mahimbing sa gabi.

So, that’s how David defines the fear of the Lord. Reflect for some areas of your life which need to recommit to God right now. God desires that we commit our lives to Him day by day. Be blessed.

JE # 83 – Response of A Believer: Prayer

Agosto 19, 2008

“I am now a Christian, a new believer of Jesus Christ. Im now sure of my salvation. So, what’s next?

This is the very basic question of a new believer. To answer this question, first let us examine the Bible regarding the new Christians identity. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says he is now a new creation – the old has gone, the new has come. Let’s dig the Bible and find out what’s new with the new Christian.

  • HE IS NOW A CHILD OF GOD

John 1:12

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God

I realized lately that nothing compares to the unselfish love of a parent for his/her child. A good father would protect his little one. A good father would give his needs. So, as a child of God, we can now be assured of God’s unselfish love – a love more than our earthly parents could give.

  • HE IS NOW A CITIZEN OF HEAVEN

Philippians 3:20a

But our citizenship is in heaven…

A citizen of heaven behaves as residents of heaven. This is our mark, our identity that wherever we go, people will recognize us because we’re not just citizens, we’re also

  • NOW AN AMBASSADOR OF HEAVEN

2 Corinthians 5:20a

We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors…

“Heavenly people”, if I may use it, shines like the sun. We are the light of the world that stand out in this dark world.

I think that’s enough for now. There’s a lot more to discover in this Christian life , just continue digging the Bible and you’ll see more.

So what’s next after committing our life to Jesus? What should be our response?

I’ve said earlier that we become children of God when we received Christ. A child can approach his/her parents without hesitation. The same is true with our loving Father. We can go to him anytime through prayer. But how do we pray? Do we need to memorize lengthy prayers and say it over and over again?

I often say to people who are asking me how they should pray, that they talk to God like talking to a friend.

Prayer is communication with God. It is our way of reaching Him, talking to Him, saying the cries of our heart, our thanksgiving and even disappointments. We can be honest with God!

Let’s read Jesus’ reminders on praying:

Matthew 6:5
..Do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray.. standing… to be seen by men.”

Do not pray just to be seen by other people. The Lord said that you have received your reward in full. If you do something like this and people praise you for being so “prayerful” then you have received your reward. Prayer should be our personal communication with God.

Matthew 6:6
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Prayer should be a personal, heart to heart talk with the Father. Although we do pray in corporate worship, the Lord wants us to come to Him personally – bringing to Him our personal request and thanksgiving. This is one of the secret things we do that God desires for His children.

Matthew 6:7-8
And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

God know our needs before we come to Him. saying the same sentences over and over again is of no use. Some people think that God will hear them if the say the same prayer repeatedly.

Thank God, Jesus taught us a model prayer prayer! This prayer need not be memorized but we can pattern our prayer though this.

OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME

In prayer, we should acknowledge God’s greatness, his rule, his reign in our lives. As we come before Him, let us be humble by declaring that He is above us, that apart from Him we are nothing. It is also saying, ” My King, my Master, I respect you.”

YOUR KINGDOM COME, YOUR WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN

As we acknowledge God’s rule over us, let’s pray for His Kingdom to reign in our lives. When we received Christ as personal Lord and savior, He has become our Master. He ought to follow everything his master’s orders. In this part, Jesus is teaching us to entrust our life to Him who knows what is best for us. He’s teaching us to have a humble heart like that of a servant to his master.

GIVE US TODAY OUR DAILY BREAD

Most of us pray because of our needs, because we can not produce food or live on our own. We are dependent on God for daily food supplies, finances, etc. Thanks be to God He knows our daily needs and I am certain He will provide it – daily!

FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS AS WE ALSO HAVE FORGIVEN OUR DEBTORS

We can’t go to God and say our request when we our guilty of some sins. It’s so awkward that you ask so many things to God and yet you are hiding something from Him. God wants us to be clean when we are approaching Him in prayer. He wants our honest heart before Him. So, in praying to God, let ask for cleansing, ask for forgiveness. We also need to forgive those who have offended us.

AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION, BUT DELIVER US FROM THE EVIL ONE.

Temptation is everywhere. By human strength, we can’t fight the temptations around God knows that we are weak and Jesus is teaching us to pray that temptations will not come our way. Our pastor would always insert in his sermon this line, “Tukso, lalayo ako sayo!” (Temptation, I’ll stay away from you!) We should have this attitude in prayer and in daily Christian walk.

That’s the model prayer that Jesus taught us based on how I understand it. If you have your own insights, you can share it below, just click the comment button.

To end this post, let me share a summary on this topic. I learned this one from different Bible teachers who taught me how to pray =) This is also for us to easily remember the pattern that Jesus taught.

C – Confession – (Confess our sins and forgive others.)
A – Adoration
T – Thanksgiving
S – Supplication / Request

Philippians 4:6
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

JE # 70 – The Dishonest Taxi Driver

Hulyo 9, 2008

For some, life is hard these days. But should this be the reason that other people think of cheating?

Last Sunday, before the 2nd worship service ends, I and a good friend left Folk Arts for a Kids outreach in Marikina. We did not waste our time. Immediately,

we found ourselves sitting in a white cab bound to MRT Station in Pasay Rotonda. On the next few minutes, we were arguing with the driver since he was insisting that the flag down rate has increased to 60 pesos. That’s double with the current rate of 30.

I then thought of this verse:

The LORD abhors dishonest scales,
but accurate weights are his delight.

– Proverbs 11:1NIV

But I like how The Message says it:

God hates cheating in the marketplace; he loves it when business is aboveboard.

Maybe he thought he gained from us. I just encouraged myself that I lose nothing. I know that the Lord is just and one day the offender will pay the price.

We Filipinos are known for “bayanihan”. When calamities strike, you can always see fellow Pinoys helping other kababayans. In this time of crisis, the bayanihan spirit should be alive. We are all affected by the crisis but this should not be the reason for us to take advantage of others.

The new taxi fare announced this evening was P40.00 which will take effect any day within this week.

Psalm 1:6 NIV

6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked will perish.

JE # 69- Who Can be Saved?

Hulyo 6, 2008

Doing good means heaven. The idea of doing good deeds will bring us to heaven after we live our life here sounds logical, right? But how good is good enough? Is there any yard stick that would measure our “goodness’ that if reach that level we will get a ticket to heaven?

“All of us have become like one who is unclean and all our righteous acts like filthy rags. ”

– Isaiah 64:6

For God, there is no one righteous. All have sinned.

Meet Robert, not his real name, he works as personal assistant of a celebrity from a giant TV network here in the Philippines. As his boss earns a lot of money, he too would benefit. After he got some huge amount, he would then rush to the nearest beer house and drink until he get drunk. He said that he would enjoy life after his hard work. He woulkd drink and “buy” women to satisfy his sexual desires.

Now meet “Jake”. He was once an active worship leader in his local church. During the early years of his Christian life, people were very blessed in his testimonies and in his worship-leading. But look at Jake now. He has gone astray. He’s living (in sin) with another man. He stopped attending worship services.

Sheryl used to say “canned” prayers at the start of her day. She never fails in her donation to a local church. Most importantly, she neglect not attending the Sunday service. And everytime she passed by a beggar, she dropped some paper bills on their cans.

Who do you think among the three is righteous or good? Robert – who is always drunk? Jake, who was once a worship leader and now living in sin? Or Sheryl who is religious and generous?

Maybe most would answer that it’s Sheryl. That sounds logical. But no one is good in God’s sight. All have fallen short. Since man fell into sin, no one has reached God’s standard of holiness – not even your religious leader. Who can be saved then?

EVERYONE can be saved!

Whether you are a Robert, Jake or a Sheryk, God can save you whatever your situation right now. God’s invitation is for everyone. You can have this salvation free of charge. All you need to do is “Come.” Salvation is freely available and God is inviting you to take this opportunity of forgiveness. There is no small or great sin that He can’t forgive. All He need is your heart – your honest and humble heart.

6 Seek the LORD while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.

7 Let the wicked forsake his way
and the evil man his thoughts.
Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

Isaiah 55:6-7

We are not good enough to inherit heaven. We have sinned and need to return to God. Call to Him while He can still be found. Don’t wait for the eleventh hour. We don’t know when we’re going to leave this world. Today is the day of salvation. And only in the name of Jesus that we can be saved and inherit eternal life.

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”

– Acts 4:12

Not in your good works, not through your religion or your achievements.

SalvationGod is saying, “Come and Repent!”

Repentance is not just being sorry for our sins. It is turning 180 degrees from our previous sinful life. You can be righteous in God’s sight. Just accept Jesus now as your personal Lord and Savior. His blood has cleansed us from all unrighteousness and your part is to believe that He has done it, that He has saved us from the punishment of sin – the eternal agony in hell.

If you want to accept God’s invitation of salvation. If you want to be with Him forever in His house, you may say this prayer. I will lead you but you should say it from your heart.

My loving Father, I have been sinful from birth. I am sure that You know the sins I’ve committed, for nothing is hidden from You. I admit that I am a sinner who needs Your forgiveness. I’m sorry Lord for the things that I’ve done. Today, I surrender my life to You and turn away from the sinful life. I believe that only Jesus can make me righteous before Your eyes. Jesus, I receive You now as my personal Savior and Lord. Lord Jesus, take over. Here’s my heart, here’s my life. From now on, reign in my life. All these things, I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Did you say that prayer? Now you have a new heart and a new life in Jesus. He wants you to enjoy this new life with Him. Get to know Him better. Read His Word – the Bible. Look for a local Christian church in your area, fellowship with other believers and join a Bible study group where Jesus is the center.
